Vacation Tips

# Seal Sample — Vacation Tips A six-scene save-this list. Three scenes are recreated from a 9:16 screen recording — a three-deck cover lockup, then two numbered tips in heavy condensed caps at the foot of full-bleed photography, each ranked by a scalloped maroon seal in the top left. Three more extend the same vocabulary with type alone and no seal: a statement, a one-more-thing pair and an end card. ## Type `oswald` 700 throughout the display copy — picked by measurement, not by eye: every headline in the recording was measured for ink width against cap height and Oswald Bold matched the set to within 0.6% at zero tracking (the next candidate, Khand 700, was 1.3% out; Anton and Bebas were 18% too narrow). Four sizes, each derived with `remToFontSize` against the 1080x1920 canvas from the measured cap heights: | where | cap in the recording | renders | | --- | --- | --- | | cover deck 1 / tip 1 | 40 / 44 px of 560 | 169 / 186 px | | cover plate line | 20 px | 85 px | | tip 2 and the text-only scenes | 31 px | 131 px | `lineHeight: -14` is 1.03em — the measured line pitch across every block, which is why the lines almost touch. Tracking is zero: the measured ink widths implied under 0.015em either way, which the stored scale rounds to 0. The rank inside the seal is `poppins` 500 — the one place the design leaves the condensed face, and it is sized off its ink width rather than its cap height, because at 59px the recording's own glyphs are two pixels of blur. Every line of display type carries the reference's hard drop shadow — `textShadow`, 14px right and down, no blur, in `deep`. It is not decoration: it is what keeps yellow caps legible over a bright photograph, and it is measured (4px of 314 in the recording). ## Colour — three roles, eight schemes | role | what it is | | --- | --- | | `ground` | the scene ground under every photograph, and every scrim tint | | `ink` | all display type, and the rank inside the seal | | `deep` | the seal, the cover plate, and the drop shadow every line carries | **Sunbaked, Surf, Punch, Grove, Ocean, Slate, Violet, Mango.** The pair that does the work in all eight is `ink` on `deep` — the rank in its seal and the cover's plate line — so each variant was chosen around that contrast (4.5 at worst, 8.3 at best) rather than around the photograph, which the scheme never touches. Every `ground` stays dark on purpose: it is also every scrim tint, and a light one would stop the scrims doing the legibility work the yellow type over a bright photograph depends on. ## Motion The reference has none: every scene is a hard cut with the type already fully placed, frame for frame. Two moves were added, because a template of dead-static type is not what the format is for, and both are short enough to read as part of the cut: - **line rise** — each authored line climbs out of its own clipped box, 0.42s, `power3.out`, staggered 0.1s. The mask is one rule in the scene's css, so it only clips the rows the copy actually breaks by hand. - **seal pop** — the rank scales in on `back.out(2)` over 0.36s. The cover's plate line opens on `scaleX` instead, so the plate reads as drawing itself rather than sliding. Nothing is anchored to a scene's end: each scene draws in over the first half second and holds. There are no transitions, which is the reference — the white frames at the end of the recording are its player looping, not a design beat. ## Scenes | # | scene | what carries it | | --- | --- | --- | | 1 | Cover | the three-deck lockup, no seal — the list has not started | | 2 | Tip 1 | two words, set at the cover's largest size | | 3 | Tip 2 | a four-line stack, stepped down a size | | 4 | Statement | four lines centred mid-frame, text only | | 5 | One more thing | a tracked kicker over one large two-line word | | 6 | End card | the ask, with a handle tracked out beneath it | Scenes 4-6 carry no seal and no plate — they are the same three type steps (186 / 131 / 85px, plus a 43px handle) placed against a scrim, so they drop into the list anywhere without inheriting its numbering. Their positions are derived the same way as the measured scenes: the statement's four-line block is optically centred from its own line pitch and cap height, the others foot-anchored on the tips' own cap tops. `meta.broll` is on the two tip photographs and on the statement and one-more-thing pictures — each IS its scene's picture under a narration that will not be the length authored here — and off the cover and the end card, which are title beats. Scene 6 is `meta.silent`: an end card holding an ask and a handle has nothing to narrate, and the silence is what keeps its 4s pinned. ## Departures from the reference The recording's backgrounds are footage; these are stills, standing in as generic placeholders. It has no scrim, because its own frames are dark where the type sits — these are slots that take any photograph, so a scrim was added per scene (a bottom gradient on the tips, a middle band on the cover) and the drop shadow does the rest. The seal steps one notch down and right per tip, which the reference does too: it is measured, not drift — the two ranks here are its first two steps. 9:16 only, which is the ratio the reference was designed at. The type is set at 131-186px on a 1080-wide canvas and the blocks fill the frame edge to edge; re-cutting that for 16:9 or 1:1 is a design pass against a reference that does not exist, not an override.
