What is spoken here

Malagasy is the national language and French is the written one

An unusual pairing, and the reason a script here usually starts in French.

Malagasy is Austronesian, not African

The national language is most closely related to languages of Borneo, thousands of miles across the Indian Ocean, rather than to anything on the African mainland. It is the first language of nearly the whole population. French is co-official and carries administration, secondary and higher education, business and most published writing, which is the division that matters when a script is commissioned.

Translate and voice in the same project

Material for Madagascar commonly starts as an English or French draft and needs the other alongside it. Translating inside the project and generating the audio there keeps the timing matched to the same visuals rather than pasting between tools and re-syncing afterwards.

How it works

Producing a voice over for Madagascar

Choose the language, translate in place, set the names, export.

Étape 1

Decide what the piece is published in

Institutional, educational and business material is normally French, which sets everything that follows.

Étape 2

Translate next to the edit

Keeping the translation in the project is what stops the audio drifting out of sync with the visuals.

Étape 3

Set the Malagasy place names

Antananarivo, Toamasina, Fianarantsoa and Mahajanga are long and follow their own rules, so fixing them once keeps a series consistent.

Étape 4

Download the file, or the whole cut

Take MP3 for radio, which reaches furthest here, or add visuals and subtitles and export a 1080p MP4.
