Two ways to pronounce Latin

Ecclesiastical Latin is read with Italian sounds

Which is the whole reason this works at all.

The Church settled on Italian pronunciation

Ecclesiastical Latin, the Latin of liturgy and the Church, is pronounced broadly as Italian is: c before e or i sounds like ch, v sounds like v, ae is a plain e. That is why an Italian voice reading a Latin text produces the pronunciation a congregation expects, rather than something approximate. Choose an Italian voice from the library and paste the Latin.

Classical Latin is a different sound entirely

The reconstructed classical pronunciation taught in universities uses hard c everywhere, v as a w and ae as a diphthong, which is a long way from the ecclesiastical reading. If a project needs the classical sound, that is a separate exercise. For liturgy, hymns, prayers and church recordings, the Italian reading is the correct one.

How it works

Reading Latin aloud from text

Pick an Italian voice, paste the Latin, mind the stress, export.

Gradus 1

Choose an Italian voice

The Italian library supplies the pronunciation ecclesiastical Latin uses. A calm, even read suits liturgical text better than an expressive one.

Gradus 2

Paste the Latin as written

Classical texts printed with macrons can keep them; they do not change the ecclesiastical reading and they help with stress.

Gradus 3

Check the stress on longer words

Latin stress depends on syllable weight, and unfamiliar liturgical vocabulary is worth hearing once before a long recording.

Gradus 4

Export the recording or a video

Take MP3 for a service, a podcast or an archive, or add visuals and subtitles here and export a 1080p MP4.
