What decides whether an Amharic read works
Four things that belong in the script rather than the settings.
Gemination is written nowhere and heard everywhere
Amharic doubles consonants to distinguish words, and the script does not mark it. Readers infer it from context and an engine guesses from frequency, so a word occasionally comes out as its twin. Where the meaning turns on it, respell the word phonetically and the reading is settled.
The ejective consonants are the accent test
The sounds written with the ejective letters have no English equivalent, and they are the first thing a native listener checks. They come through in ordinary words, and unfamiliar names are worth a quick test before the rest of the script.
Punctuation is its own system
Amharic has its own word separator and sentence stop, and modern text mixes them with Latin commas and full stops. Mixed punctuation makes the phrasing uneven, because the engine pauses on some marks and not others. Pick one system per script and stay with it.
Numbers are safer spelled out
Geez numerals, Western digits and the Ethiopian calendar all appear in the same documents. Spelling out amounts, years and times removes the ambiguity entirely, and for a voice over there is no cost to doing it.

Amharic is the working language of the federal government, of national broadcasting and of business across the country, so it is understood far beyond the people who grew up speaking it.
