Writing for a Korean voice

Four things that decide a Korean read

All of them live in the script rather than in the settings.

  1. The verb ending sets the entire tone

Korean politeness is grammatical, not decorative. A script in the formal ending sounds like a public announcement, and the same content in the casual polite ending sounds like a person talking. Choose one and hold it through the whole script; switching mid-way is what native listeners flag first.

  2. Counters decide which number system is read

Hours take native Korean numbers while minutes take Sino-Korean ones, and the pattern repeats across counters for people, objects, floors and dates. The counter tells the engine which to use, and writing an unusual one in Hangul settles it permanently.

  3. Spacing changes meaning

Korean marks phrase boundaries with spaces, and a missing one produces a different phrase rather than an obvious error. Text copied out of subtitle files, design tools or image captions sometimes loses spacing, so it is worth a glance before generating.

  4. English loanwords follow Korean sound rules

Words borrowed into Korean are pronounced by Korean phonology, not English, and written in Hangul they read correctly. Transliterate them into Hangul, including brand names, and they keep the Korean rhythm; leave them in Latin script when the English pronunciation is the point.

What the script decides

Politeness and counting are written, not configured

Two things people expect a voice setting to handle, which only the text can.

Speech level is a property of the sentence

Korean marks formality in the verb ending, so the same sentence exists in several registers. A polite voice reading a plain-form script does not make the script polite; it reads exactly what is there. Corporate and public material generally wants the formal ending, social video wants the casual polite one, and that choice belongs in the draft rather than in the voice picker.

Two number systems, chosen by the word that follows

Korean uses native numbers for some counters and Sino-Korean numbers for others, so the same digit is read differently depending on whether it counts hours, people, floors or minutes. Where a number carries weight, writing it in Hangul settles which system is used.

How it works

Generating a Korean voice over

Set the register, test a line, write out the numbers, export.

Step 1

Fix the speech level in the draft

Decide the ending before writing the rest. Mixing registers inside one script is the most common reason a Korean read feels off to a native listener, and it is invisible in translation.

Step 2

Test the hardest line first

Put a sentence containing a brand name, a number with a counter and a loanword into the box at the top of this page. Those three cover everything worth confirming before the full script.

Step 3

Mind the spacing

Korean word spacing carries meaning, and text pasted from design tools or subtitle files sometimes loses it. A quick check restores the phrasing the script intends.

Step 4

Take the MP3, or publish the video

Download MP3 for a podcast, a course or an announcement, or build visuals and Korean subtitles here and export a 1080p MP4.
