How Switzerland writes and speaks

Schweizerdeutsch is spoken, Swiss Standard German is written

That split decides what goes into the script, every time.

Narration follows the written variety

Swiss German dialects are what people speak at home, at work and on local radio, and almost nothing is published in them. News, instruction manuals, corporate video and school material are written in Swiss Standard German, which differs from the German of Germany in vocabulary and spelling. That written variety is what a script should be in, and it is what the voices here read.

Swiss Standard German is not German German

Switzerland writes Velo rather than Fahrrad, Billett rather than Fahrkarte and parkieren rather than parken, and it drops the sharp s entirely in favour of a double s. A Swiss audience notices the difference immediately, so a script carried over from a German campaign is worth a vocabulary pass before it is voiced.

How it works

Producing a Swiss voice over

Choose the language, write the Swiss variety, check the names, export.

Schritt 1

Pick German or French first

Most Swiss campaigns ship in at least two of the national languages, and building them from one project keeps the timing matched to the same visuals.

Schritt 2

Write Swiss Standard German, not dialect

Dialect spelling is unstandardised and belongs to speech rather than to scripts. Write the standard variety with Swiss vocabulary and the read comes out the way published Swiss material sounds.

Schritt 3

Use ss, and check the place names

Switzerland writes ss where Germany writes the sharp s. Place names mix German, French, Italian and Romansh roots, so set the pronunciation once for any that repeat across a campaign.

Schritt 4

Take the audio, or the finished cut

Download MP3 for a podcast, a training module or a phone system, or build visuals and subtitles here and export a 1080p MP4 for each language.
