One project, many languages

The hard part of multilingual video is keeping the versions aligned

Not the translation, and not the voices.

Versions drift when they are produced separately

A script translated in one tool, voiced in another and cut in a third arrives with lines of different lengths, timings that no longer match the visuals and terminology that has quietly diverged. Writing every version against the same edit, and generating the audio in place, keeps them aligned from the start and makes a late script change a text edit rather than a reshoot.

Each language has its own writing problems

Right-to-left scripts need their numerals kept consistent, Thai and Khmer use spaces as phrase breaks, Slavic languages decline names, and several languages carry diacritics that change the word. The per-country pages in this directory go through those one at a time, so a multilingual project can be checked language by language before anything is exported.

How it works

Producing a video in several languages

Write the master, translate in place, pick a voice per language, export.

Step 1

Write one master script

It sets the length and the running order for every other language, so it is worth getting right before anything is translated.

Step 2

Translate inside the project

Keeping the translation next to the edit is what stops the versions drifting apart later.

Step 3

Pick a voice per language

Accent matters as much as language: a Mexican voice and a Castilian one are different choices, as are Brazilian and European Portuguese.

Step 4

Export every version

MP3 for audio-only distribution, or a 1080p MP4 per language with subtitles, all from one project.
