What shapes a Farsi read

Four things set in the script

Settle these in the text and the voice follows.

  1. Short vowels live in the reader, not the page

Persian writes long vowels and leaves the short ones out, so context supplies them. It works cleanly for ordinary vocabulary, and for an unfamiliar name or a technical term the surest route is to respell the word the way it should sound.

  2. The ezafe links words without being written

The ezafe vowel joins a noun to what follows it, and standard spelling leaves it unmarked. Engines supply it from sentence structure, so clear phrasing and shorter sentences give the most natural result.

  3. Persian and Arabic letterforms differ

The Persian ی and ک differ from their Arabic counterparts, and text pasted from mixed sources sometimes carries the Arabic ones. A quick find and replace puts the Persian forms back and keeps the reading consistent.

  4. Formal and conversational Farsi are different registers

Written Persian uses full verb forms, while spoken Tehran Farsi contracts them, so می‌روم becomes می‌رم in speech. Formal for documentaries and notices, contracted for social video and dialogue; writing the one you want is what sets the tone.

Writing Farsi for a voice

Two marks in the text decide the whole read

Both are quick to add, and both change how a sentence comes out.

The half-space holds words together

Persian joins prefixes and plural endings with a zero-width non-joiner, the نیم‌فاصله, so می‌روم and کتاب‌ها keep their parts linked without a full space. Typing it, rather than a plain space, is what keeps a word reading as one word. Every Persian keyboard has it, usually on shift and space.

Iranian Farsi is its own standard

Persian is written almost identically in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan, and spoken differently in each. Tehran Farsi has its own vowels and its own everyday vocabulary, and it is the variety used in Iranian broadcasting, film and advertising. The voices here read that standard, which is what an Iranian audience expects.

How it works

Generating a Farsi voice over

Write it in Persian script, test a line, set the numbers, export.

Step 1

Paste the script in Persian letters

Keep the half-spaces in place and use the Persian forms of ی and ک rather than the Arabic ones, which text copied from mixed sources sometimes carries.

Step 2

Run one line through first

Put a line with a name, a city and a number into the box at the top of this page. Once that reads the way you want, the rest of the script follows.

Step 3

Keep one numeral system

Persian digits and Western digits both appear in Iranian documents, and holding to one of them through a script keeps the right-to-left order clean. Amounts in toman are clearest written as words.

Step 4

Export the audio or the whole video

Download MP3 for a podcast, a lesson or a phone line, or add visuals and Persian subtitles here and export a 1080p MP4.
