Writing for a Hebrew voice

Four things the text decides

Settle them in the draft and the read follows.

  1. Stress usually falls on the last syllable

Modern Hebrew stresses the final syllable in most words, with a set of common exceptions that native speakers apply without thinking. Ordinary vocabulary comes out right, and a name or a borrowed word is worth hearing once before it goes into a long script.

  2. Acronyms split into two kinds

Some are spelled out letter by letter and others have become words in their own right. Writing the ones that repeat the way you want them spoken keeps a long series consistent from the first module to the last.

  3. Register moves fast in Hebrew

The gap between formal written Hebrew and everyday speech is wide, and a script that reaches for the literary register sounds ceremonial when read aloud. For video, write the way people talk, and keep the formal register for documents meant to sound formal.

  4. English words are part of the language now

Technology, business and internet vocabulary is borrowed wholesale and pronounced with Hebrew phonology. Written in Hebrew letters it reads naturally and keeps the sentence rhythm, so transliterate rather than leaving Latin script inside a Hebrew line.

Hebrew on the page

Written Hebrew leaves the vowels to the reader

That is the one thing worth understanding before a script goes in.

Context supplies what the niqqud would mark

Everyday Hebrew is written without vowel points, so the same consonants can be more than one word and readers resolve it from context. Ordinary vocabulary reads cleanly, and for an unfamiliar name or a rare term the simplest route is to add the niqqud for that word or respell it the way it should sound.

Right-to-left text that pastes properly

Hebrew mixed with English words, Latin brand names and digits is normal in Israeli copy, and the paste keeps its order here. Hold to one numeral style across the script and the line stays in the order you wrote it, which is what keeps prices and dates reading correctly.

How it works

Generating a Hebrew voice over

Paste the text, test a line, check the terms, export.

Step 1

Paste the Hebrew as written

Without niqqud is normal and reads correctly for everyday vocabulary. Add the points only on a word where you want one specific reading.

Step 2

Run your hardest line first

Put a sentence with a name, a place and a number into the box at the top of this page before writing the full script.

Step 3

Settle the acronyms

Modern Hebrew is full of acronyms, and some are read as letters while others are read as words. Writing the ones that recur the way they should sound keeps a whole series consistent.

Step 4

Download the audio, or the film

Download MP3 for a podcast, a course or a phone line, or add visuals and Hebrew subtitles here and export a 1080p MP4.
