Writing for a Mongolian voice

Four things that shape the read

All of them settled in the text.

  1. Vowel harmony groups the suffixes

Mongolian sorts its vowels into groups, and suffixes take the form that matches the stem. Correct spelling carries that through, so a properly written word reads with consistent vowels no matter how many endings it has taken.

  2. Cyrillic spelling and pronunciation have drifted

The written form was standardised decades ago and speech has moved since, so some words are spoken with vowels the spelling no longer shows. It affects a small set of common words, and where one matters in a script it is worth hearing before committing.

  3. The letters ө and ү are not Russian

They were added for sounds Mongolian has and Russian does not, and a conversion that drops them produces a different word. They are the first thing to check in text copied from an older file.

  4. Technical vocabulary arrived through Russian

Much scientific and administrative terminology came in through Russian and is spelled accordingly. Written in Cyrillic it reads naturally, and leaving the Latin original mid-sentence switches the reading into another language.

Which script the text is in

Cyrillic is what to paste, and the vertical script is returning

Mongolia is one of the few countries actively running two writing systems.

Everyday Mongolian is written in Cyrillic

Mongolia adopted the Cyrillic alphabet in the 1940s, with two letters of its own, ө and ү, that carry sounds Russian does not have. Newspapers, websites, schooling and government all run on it, and it is what these voices read. Text that has lost those two letters in a conversion is the usual reason a line comes out unexpectedly.

The traditional script is coming back into official use

The classical vertical Mongolian script, written top to bottom, has been part of a state programme to restore it alongside Cyrillic in official documents. It is also the script used in Inner Mongolia. For a voice over, Cyrillic is the practical input, and material prepared in the traditional script is converted first.

How it works

Generating a Mongolian voice over

Paste Cyrillic, test a line, set the names, export.

Алхам 1

Check ө and ү survived the paste

They are the letters most often lost between systems, and they carry sounds that change the word.

Алхам 2

Test a line with a name in it

Put a sentence with a personal name, a place and a number into the box at the top of this page before writing the rest.

Алхам 3

Write tugrik figures out

Amounts run long, so spelling them out keeps them clear, and keeping one number format across the script keeps the reading consistent.

Алхам 4

Take the MP3, or the whole clip

Download MP3 for a lesson, a podcast or an announcement, or add visuals and subtitles here and export a 1080p MP4.
