Sichuanese Text to Speech

A Southwestern Mandarin variety spoken by well over a hundred million people across Sichuan, Chongqing and neighbouring provinces. Its tones and some of its vocabulary differ from the Beijing-based standard, and decades of comedy, television and music have made it the most widely recognised regional speech in China after the standard itself.

Written in standard Simplified characters, which is what all published material in the province uses, and kept conversational. Short sentences and everyday word choices carry the warmth that a Sichuan brief is usually after, while long formal clauses pull the read towards a news bulletin.

A script written in standard Chinese is understood everywhere, which is one reason provincial campaigns are written that way. Sichuan speech itself is unusually well recognised nationally thanks to its presence in entertainment, so the regional flavour reads as familiar rather than foreign to audiences elsewhere.

Chinese groups numbers in units of ten thousand rather than thousand, so a figure punctuated in the Western way can be read in the wrong blocks. Where a number carries weight, write it in characters. Measure words are the other thing to confirm, since the right one depends on the noun.
