Writing for a Pashto voice
Settled in the script rather than in the settings.
ټ, ډ, ړ, ږ, ښ, ګ and ڼ are not decorative variants of Arabic letters. Each stands for a sound Pashto has and Arabic does not, so substituting the nearest Arabic letter produces a different word rather than a slight accent.
The ښ and ږ letters are pronounced differently in the Kandahar region than around Kabul and Peshawar, which is the main audible split in the language. Writing standard spelling keeps the text neutral, and the voice supplies one consistent reading.
As in Arabic and Persian, the short vowels are left out and context supplies them. It works cleanly for ordinary vocabulary, and an unfamiliar name or technical term is best respelled the way it should sound.
The two official languages borrow from each other freely, especially in administrative and technical vocabulary. Written in Pashto spelling those words stay inside the rhythm of the sentence rather than pulling the reading towards Persian.

Pashto on the keyboard
It is the first thing to check in any text that has travelled between systems.
Pashto extends the Arabic script with ټ, ډ, ړ, ږ, ښ, ګ and ڼ, which carry retroflex and other sounds that neither Arabic nor Persian has. A text typed on an Arabic keyboard, or converted carelessly, substitutes the nearest Arabic letter and changes the word. A Pashto keyboard produces them correctly, and checking they are present is the fastest quality check there is.
Pashto and Dari are both official in Afghanistan, and most published material appears in one or the other depending on the region and the audience. These voices read Pashto. For Dari, which is a variety of Persian, the Persian library is the place to start, and a project can carry both versions against the same visuals.
How it works
Check the letters, test a line, settle the terms, export.
ټ, ډ, ړ, ږ, ښ, ګ and ڼ are the ones that go missing in conversion. A Pashto keyboard or a quick find and replace restores them.
Put a sentence with a name, a province and a number into the box at the top of this page.
Afghan documents use both Eastern Arabic and Western digits. Keeping one style through the script, and spelling out the figures that matter, gives the clearest reading.
