Writing for a Khmer voice
Four things the script settles
Decided in the text, before any voice is chosen.
Khmer has registers rather than tones
Unlike Thai, Lao and Vietnamese, Khmer is not tonal. What it has instead is two vowel series tied to the consonant class, which change how a vowel sounds. The spelling carries that information, so correct Khmer spelling produces the correct reading without any extra marking.
Spaces are punctuation
Words run together and a space marks the end of a phrase or a clause. That makes spacing the main tool for shaping the rhythm of a read, and a script with its spaces placed deliberately sounds far closer to a presenter than one broken up at random.
The royal and monastic vocabulary is a separate register
Khmer has distinct word sets for addressing royalty and monks, with everyday equivalents for the same ideas. Most video uses the ordinary register, and material touching ceremony or religion is worth having checked by someone who writes in that register regularly.
Numbers come in two sets
Khmer numerals and Western digits both appear in Cambodian documents. Keeping to one of them through a script, and writing out the figures that matter, gives the clearest reading.

Getting Khmer text right
Unicode Khmer is what to paste
One check on the source text decides everything that follows.
Older documents may carry legacy fonts
Khmer text from the 2000s often used fonts like Limon that mapped Khmer letters onto Latin character slots, so the file looks like Khmer on screen and arrives as Latin characters anywhere else. Unicode Khmer is the standard now and is what every modern keyboard produces. If a pasted line comes out unexpectedly, converting the source to Unicode settles it.
Khmer stacks its consonants
Khmer is an abugida where a second consonant is written beneath the first as a subscript form, and words run together without spaces, which mark phrase breaks instead. Modern keyboards handle the stacking correctly, and putting a space where you want the voice to pause gives the phrasing you intend.
How it works
Generating a Khmer voice over
Paste Unicode Khmer, test a line, place the spaces, export.
Check the text is Unicode Khmer
Anything typed on a current phone or computer already is. Older material may need converting first, and free converters handle it in seconds.
Run one line through first
Put a sentence with a name, a place and a number into the box at the top of this page before writing the full script.
Use spaces as phrase breaks
Khmer does not space between words, so a space marks where a phrase ends. Placing them where you want the voice to breathe shapes the whole read.
Save the audio, or finish the video
Download MP3 for a lesson, a podcast or a phone line, or add visuals and Khmer subtitles here and export a 1080p MP4.
