Malay is not Indonesian

The two languages diverge where it matters most

They read as one language until the script hits money, transport or anything official.

Same roots, different everyday words

A Malaysian writes percuma where an Indonesian writes gratis, bilik where the other writes kamar, and kereta means a car in Kuala Lumpur and a train in Jakarta. Spelling diverged too, so for Malaysian audiences the thing to do is write Malaysian and pick a Malaysian voice, and the read lands as local.

Two languages here, four in the country

This page covers Bahasa Melayu and Tamil. Mandarin and English work is better started from those language pages, where the libraries are far larger than any country listing could show. Most Malaysian campaigns ship in at least two languages, and building them from one project keeps the timing matched to the same visuals.

How it works

Producing a Malaysian voice over

Write Malaysian spelling, choose the language, set the local names, export.

Step 1

Check the script is Malaysian, not Indonesian

Watch for the giveaway words: percuma against gratis, boleh against bisa, bilik against kamar. Translation tools default to Indonesian more often than people expect.

Step 2

Pick the language before the voice

The voices here split across Bahasa Melayu and Tamil. Start from the language your audience uses, then compare voices inside it.

Step 3

Set ringgit amounts and place names

Write RM 1,500 out in words where the figure carries weight, and fix the pronunciation once for names like Putrajaya, Melaka and Johor Bahru if they repeat across a campaign.

Step 4

Export audio or a finished video

Take an MP3 for radio, training and phone systems, or build the visuals and subtitles here and export a 1080p MP4 for each language from one project.
