Lao once wrote etymological spellings in the way Thai still does, and a mid-century reform cut them, so the script now maps closely onto pronunciation. The practical effect is that correctly spelled Lao is read correctly, with far less room for a word to be guessed wrong than in languages that kept their historical spellings.

Tone marks carry meaning, spaces carry phrasing

Lao is tonal, and the tone comes from the consonant class together with any tone mark, so the spelling encodes it. Words run together without spaces, and a space marks the end of a phrase, which makes spacing the main way to shape where the voice breathes.

Thai kept its historical spellings, which is one reason the two scripts look related but behave differently.
