What makes a voice sound Australian
Two features carry almost all of it, and both are audible in the first line.
Australian English shifted its long vowels away from British English in a way American English never did, so day, buy and no sit in different places than either. The a in dance and castle varies by state rather than by speaker. Australians place an accent in about a second, which is why the samples are the quickest way to choose.
High rising terminal, where a statement lifts like a question, is a genuine feature of Australian speech rather than uncertainty. Where a line should carry it, writing the sentence as a question mark lets the voice lift naturally, and for training and announcements the level read is what you want anyway.
How it works
Shortlist by job, hear the samples, fix the place names, export.
Most of the voices here have a ready sample, which is unusual. Listening to five of them takes a minute and rules out most of the library faster than any filter.
Organise, realise, centre and colour. Spelling does not change the sound much, but American spelling in an Australian script is the sort of detail that gets noticed in client review.
Cairns, Launceston, Canberra and Albany follow their own rules rather than the spelling, as do the Aboriginal-origin names. Set the pronunciation once for any that repeat across a campaign.
Download MP3 for radio, podcast and phone systems, or build visuals and captions here and export a 1080p MP4 from the same script.
