The Taglish problem

How to write a Taglish script that reads well

One decision in the draft, and the rest of the production is straightforward.

Switch language at the full stop

Each voice reads one language per line, so the trick is to let the switch land between sentences rather than inside one. Keep the Filipino line Filipino and the English line English, alternate them, and you get the back and forth Taglish audiences expect, with every word pronounced the way it should be.

Philippine English is its own accent

It is not American English with a lilt. The rhythm is more evenly timed, the vowels are shorter, and the t and d stay crisp where American English softens them. For call-centre training, corporate video and local advertising that difference is exactly what makes the read sound like it came from Manila rather than from a stock library, which is what people mean when they search for Filipino accent text to speech. The voices here cover both it and Filipino.

How it works

Making a Philippine voice over

Split the languages, pick the voices, check the names, export.

Step 1

Split Taglish at the sentence

Keep each sentence in one language. A clean break between languages is what keeps every word pronounced the way it should be.

Step 2

Assign a voice per language

Filipino lines to a Filipino voice, English lines to a Philippine English one. Using one voice per language in a single video is normal here, and it is what gives a Taglish script its natural back and forth.

Step 3

Check Spanish-era place names

Many Philippine place and family names come from Spanish, so a voice applying English spelling rules gets them wrong. San Juan, Cabanatuan and Nuevo Ecija are worth setting once if they recur in a series.

Step 4

Export audio or a finished video

Download MP3 for radio, training and phone systems, or build visuals and captions here and export a 1080p MP4 from the same script.
