Writing for an Algerian voice

The French in the sentence is the hard part

Accent is the easy half. What breaks a read is the language the script switches into halfway through.

Derja borrows more French than any other Arabic

A normal Algerian sentence carries French verbs conjugated as Arabic ones and French nouns nobody translates: la chambre, le train, normalement. Typed in Latin letters they flip the voice into French mid-line. Written in Arabic letters they are read as Arabic and land close to how people actually say them. Transliterate first, and the read holds together.

Two native voices, and what that means

Algeria has voices tagged to it here, both ar-DZ. That is a small library next to the dozens on the Egyptian or Gulf pages, so the realistic use is narration and announcements rather than a cast of characters. For a dialogue piece, mix in a Moroccan or Tunisian voice: Maghrebi Arabic travels across those borders far better than Gulf Arabic does.

How it works

Making an Algerian voice over

Transliterate the French, pick a voice, check the names, export.

Step 1

Put the whole script into Arabic letters

Including the French words. Latin script inside an Arabic line is the single most common reason a Maghrebi read goes wrong, and it is a two-minute fix in the draft.

Step 2

Choose between the Algerian voices

Both ar-DZ voices have a ready sample, so you can hear the same line twice before deciding. One reads warmer, the other flatter, and for announcements the flatter read usually wins.

Step 3

Spell out the dinar amounts

Write 2500 دينار rather than an abbreviation, and keep one numeral system across the script instead of mixing ١٢٣ with 123 inside a line, which is where the reading order goes astray.

Step 4

Export the audio or the whole video

Take an MP3 for radio, a reel or a phone line, or add visuals and subtitles and export a 1080p MP4 built from the same script.
