Standard

Derja or Modern Standard

The register decides how far the video travels

This is the one choice worth making before anything is written.

Tunisian is the furthest of the Maghrebi varieties

Derja carries Amazigh structure, French vocabulary and a layer of Italian and Maltese contact that the rest of the Arab world never had. Tunisians follow Egyptian and Gulf Arabic comfortably, because they grew up watching it. The traffic does not run the other way: a Derja cut plays across the Maghreb and loses most of a Mashreq audience.

So pick by audience, not by preference

Domestic advertising, social video and anything meant to sound like a person belongs in Derja. Pan-Arab campaigns, official notices and corporate material that will also run in Cairo or Dubai belong in Modern Standard. The Tunisian voices here read both, because the register lives in the words you write, not in the voice you pick.

How it works

Producing a Tunisian voice over

Choose the register, write it in Arabic letters, check the names, export.

Step 1

Decide the register first

Derja for Tunisia, Modern Standard for the wider Arab world. Rewriting a script from one to the other afterwards is slower than writing it twice, because the sentence shapes differ, not just the words.

Step 2

Keep French out of Latin letters

Tunisian sentences carry French the way Algerian ones do, and Latin script inside an Arabic line flips the voice into another language. Transliterate the French into Arabic letters and the line holds together.

Step 3

Hear both voices on the same line

Both Tunisian voices ship with a sample, so the comparison takes a few seconds. One reads warmer and suits advertising, the other flatter and suits announcements and training.

Step 4

Export the audio or the finished film

Take an MP3 for radio and phone lines, or build visuals and subtitles here and export a 1080p MP4 from the same script.
