Before you generate a Darija voice over

What these voices read best

Two things to get right in the script, and the read takes care of itself.

Write Darija in Arabic letters

Moroccans write Darija two ways: in Arabic script, and in Latin letters with digits standing in for Arabic sounds, so 3 for ع, 7 for ح and 9 for ق. Arabic script is the one to paste: convert Arabizi first, with any keyboard, and the same sentence reads cleanly.

French and Berber words in the middle of a sentence

A normal Moroccan sentence carries French and Amazigh words that nobody translates: réunion, portable, facture. Written in Arabic letters they are read as Arabic and usually land close enough. Left in Latin script they switch the voice into another language mid-line. Transliterate them, or set the pronunciation once if the word repeats across a series.

How it works

Making a Darija voice over in four steps

Write it in Arabic script, pick a voice, fix the loanwords, export.

Step 1

Write the script in Arabic letters

Darija spelling is not standardised, so write it the way it sounds. If your draft is in Arabizi, convert it first: digits and Latin letters are read literally.

Step 2

Listen to the Moroccan voices

The voices tagged to Morocco mostly have a ready sample. Compare the same line on each: the library is small, so the gap between a news read and a conversational one matters more than any filter.

Step 3

Settle the loanwords and the numbers

Transliterate French words you want read as speech. Keep one numeral system in the script, either ١٢٣ or 123, because mixing them inside one line is where the reading order goes wrong.

Step 4

Export audio, or build the video around it

Download an MP3 for a reel, a podcast or a phone line, or add visuals and subtitles and export a 1080p MP4 from the same script.
